Much of Milk & Honey Missions has been about learning. Cultural, language and distance hurdles are obvious. Less so, is the challenge of finding sustainable projects with lasting impacts and the potential for improving the life prospects for Honduran families.
Milk & Honey’s partnership with Lutheran World Relief (LWR) has provided a solution to this challenge. We are proud to support a water conservation and agricultural education initiative in Olancho province in Honduras. LWR’s tagline, “Sustainable Development, Lasting Promise,” represents its philosophy of establishing collaborative partnerships with people and communities to build better lives and stronger futures. LWR helps rural communities in the developing world increase and expand resources needed to enable people to live productive, healthy, and empowered lives. For more information on LWR, see their website at www.lwr.org.
LWR is providing technical and operational support to our project which is centered in a rural congregation in the community of La Cañada. The project goals are 3 fold: (1) improve water usage, (2) educate adults in modern farming techniques, and (3) educate and motivate children to grow small kitchen gardens. The benefits and outcomes, expected to touch about 1000 lives, are: water conservation and irrigation, improved diets, improved economic potential from increased crop yields, farmers organized into a cooperative group to share knowledge, equipment and marketing, and strengthening the local faith community by providing tangible support to the surrounding residents.
Milk & Honey Missions is proud to join with the community of La Cañada to achieve these goals and improve the lives of the residents in tangible and lasting ways. The plan is for this project to have a life of about two years. With your support, we hope to duplicate the success of this initiative in another community in the years ahead.
